JOB Shadowing

Reasons to Job Shadow

  • Help you get more healthcare experience and better understand your motivations for pursuing medicine

    • This will help you when you're writing your personal statement

  • Builds relationships with healthcare professionals for letters of recommendation in the future

  • Allows you to begin exploring different specialties before your clinical years in medical school

Get shadows in early - talk to your own doctors and your parents doctors about potentially shadowing them. It's really hard to get in enough shadowing hours and so jump at any specialty you may be offered even if you think at first that you may not be interested in it, you never know. I didn't know how interesting pathology was until I shadowed a pathologist!

Shadowing is a good way to learn about what specialties are available, what they do, and what their workload is like. If there is time on your shadowing day, ask your physician about the medical and non-medical aspects of their career. As I approach clinical years, lifestyle has become an important factor I consider when thinking of potential specialties, so I am very glad I had the opportunity to discuss this topic with physicians in various specialties.

Virtual Shadowing

Participants will be able to join the meeting at 7:00 pm, and it will be "first come - first serve", as we can only hold up to 500 people at a time on ZOOM, at least at the moment.

Medical YouTube Channels

  • Though typical YouTube channels can't be considered "job shadowing" because there is no patient interaction observation, they can still be helpful in finding your place in medicine and learning more about yourself and healthcare
